Week 2

The second week of the FAT project has started. After some delay from last week, because we got stuck with our concept, this week started with fresh minds and also important the presence of our last group member. While we were still discussing the first concept he was able to bring in some fresh ideas with which we actually all thought positive about.

On Monday we had scheduled a WhatsApp meeting, for all of us was set a deadline on Monday before 5 to upload some new ideas. This was mainly so we could present at least something on Tuesday during the consulting lecture. At the end of this week we finally came up with a clearer concept description and why our concept adds value to the city of Enschede. Our concept: With the Shape of Sound we are going to combine two cultural aspects of Enschede, music an art. The installation will provide the user a new experience in art and music in an interactive way.

How does the installation work?

In our installation we are combining the technique of Chladni with holograms. By moving your hands on the x and y-axis you create music. The music is related to changing objects in the hologram. This way we give sound a shape and make it more touchable.

The y and x-axis have a different effect on the shape of the hologram.

color changing (hand low → lots of color, hand high less color)

shaking of the hologram (hand low → hologram shakes more)

The intensity and the shaking of the shape will make the experience more intense.

x-axis

changing sounds (right sounds get more intense)

shape varies from really soft to really harsh (lef → soft shapes, right→ harsh shapes)

Not only the hologram gives feedback on the movement of your hands. Also the sound of the installation will change in a way related to you hand movements. If the hologram gets more intense the sound will also get louder and intenser.

If nobody is using the installation you will see an animation that is related to the shop as a hologram. This will be a promotion for the skateshop we are standing in front of.

To show the user more cultural event in Enschede there will be a (hologram) QR code that you can scan. This code will lead you to our website which provides information about our installation and shows other free cultural events in Enschede.

Our final goal is to promote “off the grid” events for young people who are interested in urban culture. We will achieve that by building an installation that visualizes sounds in an interactive way. This way we present art and music in a different way than they were used to see. Once we grab the attention of the passers by, we present our website that promotes free events in Enschede. On top of that we promote the cultural part of Enschede. The people who are fascinated by our installation will share the good experience with their friends through social media, thus promoting our website as well and ultimately attract more people to visit Enschede. Besides that, if visitors know there is more to do in Enschede besides shopping the will maybe extend their stay.

After we defined this concept we were able to choose a store where we wanted to introduce our concept, the not a skate shop, cause our concept is a bit abstract and arty we thought we could made a good match and in the end it was confirmed! Although the owner still needs to discuss if we are able to stand in front of their shop he was really enthusiastic. Further more for this week we thought about realization. What do we need, who can be valuable sponsors or partners, the costs, the techniques, all the important stuff we can't forget about. Besides that we created the one pager.

Another important thing for our group is that we acknowledge in all of us is that we get tired from long days, to break this through we sometimes go for a lunch walk. This is in our opinion good for team bonding and for creating a more fresher mind. We talk about our personal lives, eat and most of the time drink some coffee.

At the end of this week we finalized our morphological chart, while creating this we got a clearer view on our options to use for certain techniques.

For next week we all got some tasks to finish and after that we will think about how to build and realize our concept, but first the jury needs to accept our concept.
